How to test a dictation app in 15 minutes
Every dictation app looks great in its own video. The only test that counts is your voice, your mic and your words. Most of the apps above have a free version or a trial, so run this on two or three of them in one sitting and compare.
- Pick three real jobs. A reply to a client email, a Slack message to a teammate, and a paragraph of a document you are actually writing.
- Use your normal setup. The mic you really use, the room you really sit in. A studio mic in a quiet room tells you nothing about your Tuesday afternoon.
- Speak the test script below in each app, the same way each time.
- Count the fixes. How many words did you have to change before you would send it? Names count double, because those are the errors clients notice.
- Check the feel. How fast did the text appear? Did the shortcut get in your way? Did it keep your words or rewrite them?

The pattern: talk for anything longer than a sentence or two, type for small edits. Sam does not dictate design feedback line by line or code. He dictates the writing that used to eat his mornings. Exact words or polished text?
This is the biggest split between dictation apps in 2026, and it matters more than accuracy. Some apps, like Apple Dictation, MacWhisper and SayBriefly, type what you said, with at most a light cleanup of fillers and punctuation. Others, like Wispr Flow and Willow, lean toward polished writing and may change your sentences to read better.
Polished output is great for quick messages where tone does not matter much. For client email, many people prefer exact words: the client hears you, not a model's idea of you, and you are never surprised by a sentence you did not say. Try both kinds with the test script above and notice which one you trust enough to send without rereading.
