Works in Safari, Chrome, Brave and Arc. Tasks stay in this browser.

The short answer

A pomodoro timer for Mac is any app that runs focus rounds (usually 25 minutes) and short breaks on macOS, so you can work in timed blocks without watching the clock. macOS has no built-in one.

  • Be Focused: best classic Mac timer with its own task list.
  • Session: best for blocking apps and sites, and for Slack users.
  • Flow: best simple, native Apple timer with a blocker.
  • Pomofocus: best web timer, also on Mac, Windows and Linux.
  • Forest: best if your phone is the distraction.
  • SayBriefly: best if your tasks come from client calls and email.

Use the timer now

The timer at the top of this page works in any Mac browser. No install, no account. Add up to three tasks, tap the one you are working on, and press Start. When a focus round ends, a chime plays and that task gets a count. After four rounds you get a 15 minute break.

We build SayBriefly, and this is the same timer that sits on the to-do list inside the SayBriefly app for Mac and Windows. The difference in the app is where the tasks come from. More on that in the review below.

The timer is the easy part. Knowing what to start on is the hard part.

What a Mac pomodoro app should do

Every app below can count down 25 minutes. That is table stakes. What sets them apart is everything around the timer. Before you pick one, know which of these you actually need.

A timer that stays out of the way

Menu bar countdown, a sound at the end, auto-start for the next round if you want it.

Distraction blocking

Some apps shut off chosen sites and apps while a round runs. Useful if your problem is the browser.

A place for tasks

A timer with no task attached is just a clock. Most apps let you name what you are working on.

Sync and history

Counts per day or week, and your rounds on iPhone too, if you work across devices.

The 6 best pomodoro timers for Mac, reviewed

1. Be Focused: best classic Mac timer

Mac, iPhone, iPad · free download, Be Focused Pro $19.99 on the Mac App Store

Be Focused is the long-running pick on Mac. Its App Store listing covers the whole classic kit: set your own work and break lengths, pick how many rounds come before a long break, set a daily goal, and plan how many rounds a task should take. Tasks can carry notes, tags and due dates.

It also blocks chosen apps and websites during work rounds, with an allow list, and has reports you can export to CSV. Everything syncs between Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Good

  • Every setting the technique needs
  • Task list with round estimates
  • App and website blocking

Worth knowing

  • Two separate apps (free and Pro), so read the listing before buying
  • You type your tasks in by hand

Pick Be Focused if you want a proper pomodoro app and nothing else.

2. Session: best for blocking and Slack

Mac, iPhone, iPad · free download with a paid Pro

Session is built around the Mac. Its site says it blocks the apps and websites you choose while a session runs, in Safari, Chrome, Brave and Edge, and restores them when you rest. The website blocker is Mac only. It can also mute Slack teams or set your Slack status while you focus, and it syncs your progress across iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Good

  • Strong blocker on Mac
  • Slack status and mute
  • End of day review of your sessions

Worth knowing

  • Apple only, no Windows
  • Some features need Pro

Pick Session if Slack and the browser are what pull you away.

3. Flow: best simple native timer

Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch · basic features free, no sign-up

Flow is small on purpose. Its site says the basic features are free, with no ads and no sign-up. The App Store listing adds an app and web blocker, a commitment mode, stats, Apple Calendar and Apple Health sync, and widgets on iPhone.

Good

  • Clean and fast to start
  • Blocker and commitment mode
  • Works across Apple devices

Worth knowing

  • Apple only
  • A session title, not a task list

Pick Flow if you want the lightest native timer with a blocker.

4. Pomofocus: best web timer on any computer

Web, plus downloads for Mac, Windows and Linux · free, paid Premium

Pomofocus is the timer many people land on first. It runs in the browser, lets you add tasks with a round estimate, and shows reports by day, week and month. Its site offers Mac, Windows and Linux downloads. Premium adds project time tracking, yearly reports, app connections and no ads.

Good

  • Nothing to install
  • Same timer on every OS
  • Tasks with estimates

Worth knowing

  • No blocking
  • A web app first, not a native Mac app

Pick Pomofocus if you switch between a Mac and a PC.

5. Forest: best when the phone is the problem

iPhone, Android, browser extension · core free, optional upgrades

Forest grows a tree while you focus, and the tree withers if you leave. It is a phone app first. On a computer, its own site points to a browser extension that brings the timer and site blocking to desktop browsing. We did not find a Forest app on the Mac App Store when we checked.

Good

  • A small, real reason not to pick up the phone
  • Group focus with friends

Worth knowing

  • On Mac it lives in the browser
  • No task list

Pick Forest if you lose your focus to your phone, not your Mac.

6. SayBriefly: best when your tasks come from clients

Mac and Windows · focus timer, to-do list, calls, email, calendar and dictation in one app

SayBriefly is not a timer app. It is one app for client work: meeting notes with no bot, Gmail, a to-do list, a calendar, dictation and an agent called Scribbble, all sharing one memory and tied to your client projects. The focus timer sits on that to-do list.

That changes the first minute of every round. You do not type what to work on. Tasks are already there, pulled from your calls and email once you switch that on, each with a link back to where it came from. Pick a few, press play, and the SayBriefly window turns into a calm focus card showing just those tasks and the countdown. Tick them off as you go.

Example of the layout. Real tasks only show what came from your own calls and email.

Good

  • The timer runs on tasks you did not have to type
  • Each task links back to its call or email
  • Mac and Windows

Worth knowing

  • No app or website blocking
  • Focus lengths in the app are fixed at 25, 5 and 15 minutes today
  • No iPhone or Android app

Pick SayBriefly if the hard part is not the timer but knowing what to work on.

Set up your Mac for a focus round

Whatever app you pick, a few Mac settings make each round easier to protect.

  1. Turn on a Focus mode. In System Settings, Focus, make a "Work" focus that silences everything except the people who really need you.
  2. Hide the Dock badges. Red numbers pull your eye. Turn off badges for mail and chat in Notifications.
  3. One window, full screen. Put the app you are working in full screen so other windows are out of sight.
  4. Pick the task before you press Start. A round with no clear task turns into email. Write the one thing down.
  5. Leave the Mac at the break. Stand up, look out a window, drink water. Scrolling is not a break.

How we checked

We read each app's Mac App Store listing and its own website in September 2026, and only state what the maker says about its own app. We did not include ratings or review counts because they change weekly. SayBriefly is our product, and we have said plainly where the others do more, like blocking.

Questions people ask about pomodoro timers for Mac

What is the best pomodoro timer for Mac?

It depends on what you want besides the timer. Be Focused is best for a classic timer with its own task list. Session and Flow are best if you want apps and websites blocked while you work. SayBriefly is best if your tasks come from client calls and email and you want the timer on that list.

Is there a free pomodoro timer for Mac?

Yes. The timer on this page runs in any Mac browser with no signup. Be Focused, Session and Flow are free to download from the Mac App Store, with paid upgrades. Pomofocus has a free web timer and a Mac download.

Does macOS have a built-in pomodoro timer?

No. macOS has Focus modes that silence notifications and a Clock app with a timer on recent versions, but nothing that runs focus rounds and breaks in a cycle. You need an app or a web timer for that.

Can a pomodoro app block distracting websites on a Mac?

Some can. Be Focused, Session and Flow all list app and website blocking. SayBriefly does not block other apps. While its timer runs, the SayBriefly window turns into a focus card with only your chosen tasks.

Is there a pomodoro timer in the Mac menu bar?

Several Mac apps put the countdown in the menu bar. Check the App Store listing before you install if that matters to you. This web timer shows the countdown in the browser tab title instead.

Is Forest available on Mac?

Forest is a phone app. On a computer, its own site points to a browser extension that brings the timer and site blocking to desktop browsing. We did not find a Forest app on the Mac App Store when we checked.

Does SayBriefly work on Windows too?

Yes. SayBriefly runs on Mac and Windows. There is no iPhone or Android app.

Which pomodoro app works on Mac and Windows?

Pomofocus has downloads for Mac, Windows and Linux, and a web version. SayBriefly runs on both Mac and Windows. Be Focused, Session and Flow are Apple only.

What length should a pomodoro be?

The classic is 25 minutes of focus and a 5 minute break, with a longer break after four rounds. Many people use 45 or 50 minutes for deep work. The presets on this timer go from 5 to 60 minutes.

It's 4pm on a Friday. The brief is locked, the client is happy, and Scribbble already sent the meeting recap. You close the laptop.
