Fantastical is made by Flexibits. Its site lists apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro. The features people love are real, and worth naming before you leave:

Why people look for a Fantastical alternative
1. The subscription
The free tier is useful, but the features that made Fantastical famous for power users sit behind Premium. People who remember buying calendar apps once often look for a one-time purchase instead. BusyCal is the obvious answer there.
2. Android
Flexibits does not list an Android app. If you carry an Android phone, or your partner does and you share a calendar, you need something that runs there. Google Calendar and Notion Calendar both do.
3. The calendar ends where the work begins
This is the reason we hear most from freelancers and small studios. Fantastical is excellent at getting you into the call on time. Then the call happens, and the calendar has nothing more to say. The notes live somewhere else. The tasks you promised live somewhere else. The email the client sends two days later lives somewhere else again. The calendar is the most-looked-at app of the day, and it holds the least of the story.
4. It is more than you need
Some people only want their events in a clean list. Apple Calendar and Google Calendar do that, and they are already on the phone.

The Fantastical alternatives, reviewed

SayBriefly is not trying to be a prettier Fantastical. It is a work app for freelancers and small studios where the calendar sits next to everything the calendar points at. Your Google Calendar syncs in, with day, week and month views. Tasks that have a time show up on the calendar next to your meetings. Clients book you through booking links with buffers, minimum notice, optional approval and a form, and each booking lands as a lead and a contact.
When a call happens, SayBriefly records it from your computer with no bot joining, writes the note, and opens it with Since last call: what got done, what is still open, what was asked again and what changed. Tasks live in the separate Reminders app. If what you mostly did in Fantastical was look at your week, Apple Calendar will feel like enough within a few days.

Notion Calendar is the closest thing to a free Fantastical on this list. Notion's site lists apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, sync with Google Calendar, Outlook and iCloud calendars, scheduling links to share your availability, and a menu bar to join meetings. Its special trick is Notion: project timelines and database items show on the calendar, and you can drag them around.

BusyCal is the veteran Mac power-user calendar. Its site lists natural language input in several languages, tasks that sync with Apple Reminders, day, week, month, year and list views, weather and moon phases, travel time, smart filters, time zone favourites and a menu bar mini calendar. It is sold once for $49.99, or included in a Setapp subscription.

6. Outlook Calendar: for Microsoft 365 workplaces
If your employer runs on Microsoft 365, your calendar is already in Outlook, along with your mail and your colleagues' free and busy times. Tasks sit in Microsoft To Do. It is not a joy the way Fantastical is, but inside a Microsoft company, fighting it rarely pays off.

A freelancer's week: one calendar, two ways

All correct, all on time. But look at what the calendar does not hold. On Monday's kickoff, the bakery owner asked for three logo directions and mentioned a deadline for a market stall on the 18th. On Tuesday, Pine and Pixel asked for a darker green. By Friday's second review, Maya has to remember whether she sent the darker green, and whether the bakery's three directions were agreed in writing. In a calendar-only setup, that memory lives in her head, a notes app and her inbox.

The calendar is the same. The difference is that every block on it leads somewhere. Friday's call starts with what changed since Tuesday, and the tasks from Monday are on the list she plans from, not in a note she has to find. That is the gap SayBriefly was built for. If your week does not look like Maya's, you probably do not need it.
Where Fantastical still wins
Be honest with yourself here. Fantastical is better than SayBriefly if:

How to switch calendar apps without losing anything
The good news: your events do not live in Fantastical. They live in the calendar account underneath it (iCloud, Google, Exchange). Switching apps is mostly about pointing the new app at the same account.
- Find out where your events actually are. In Fantastical's settings, look at which accounts are connected. That is what you will reconnect.
- Check the new app supports that account. Notion Calendar reads Google, Outlook and iCloud. SayBriefly reads Google only. If your events are in iCloud and you want SayBriefly, move work events to a Google calendar first.
- Move your tasks separately. Tasks are the part that does not travel. Export or copy open tasks into the new app's list.
- Rebuild your booking link. If clients book you through Fantastical Openings, set up the new booking link and update your email signature and website before cancelling.
- Run both for a week. Keep the old app installed until you trust the new one's notifications.
